Chinese New Year Decorations 2020: Lucky Ornaments (DIY Ideas)

couplet poems written on red paper used as chinese new year decoration

The Spring Festival is a celebration full of joyous activities and meaningful Chinese New Year decoration because wherever you are in the world, you are bound to see bright red embellishments representing wishes for blessings and prosperity for the near future.

People also wear traditional Chinese New Year clothes to exude festive vibes. Below are some of the most popular ornaments used to evoke festive vibes during the occasion.

Paper Cutting Arts (窗花)

Paper cutting is a folk art that is practiced in many holidays but is most prominent during the Chinese New Year. Literally translates to “window flower,” these artworks can be extremely intricate and are usually seen on windows. Craftsmen paste them using only sticky rice glue. The subjects of these Chinese New Year decorations are often auspicious symbols or phrases.

For instance, fish are puns for blessings, while others like dragons represent Chinese folktales or legends. Images of grains are also crafted to represent hopes of a bountiful harvest. Learn more about zodiacs from Chinese Zodiac: The 12 Zodiac Animals

Door Gods (门神)

Chinese folk religion adheres to many gods and among them are the feisty Door Gods. Images of these powerful warriors are embedded onto the main entrance of the home. The traditional Chinese entrance consists of two doors which is why they are always seen as a pair. Images of the Door Gods are figured after Zhong Kui (钟馗), a popular demon hunter with a terrifying face.

The origin story of the Door Gods dates back to the Tang Dynasty (唐太宗). One night, Emperor Taizong heard howls of demons so he ordered two generals to guard the entrance. The cries of the demons ceased and were never heard again and the emperor honored the generals by pasting their portraits on the door. Although not as popular as in ancient times, some people still place images of the Door Gods on their doors to bring peace and fortune to their homes.

Fortune (福)

Calligraphy is another popular form of art in China. Characters representing blessings are written on square pieces of red paper and pasted on walls, doors, or windows. The most common character used as Chinese New Year decoration is fu (福) as it represents fortune.

an image of the fu character upside down
People hang the character upside down in honor of a compassionate empress.

People are also inclined to display the character upside down as a play on words. In Chinese, the term for “upside-down” (倒) is a homophone of the Chinese term for “here” (到).

The origin story of this myth involves an emperor who ordered his people to paste the fu character on their doors. However, a family of illiterates mistakenly pasted the character upside down. On New Year’s Day, the emperor sent his troops to see if the people were able to follow his orders. They found the upside-down decoration and condemned the family to death.

Fortunately, the sympathetic empress came up with a clever explanation: because the Chinese terms for “upside-down” and “here” sound alike, the upside-down character should be interpreted as “fortune is here.” The excuse of the empress convinced the emperor to set the illiterate family free. Today, people continue to display the fu character upside down in memory of the kind empress.

Spring Festival Couplets (春联)

Tracing back to over one thousand years ago, Spring Festival couplets have been a staple Chinese New Year decoration for a long time. These couplets were originally carved into tablets made from peach trees until red strips of paper became the mainstream medium.

chinese new year decoration couplet poems placed on a sidewalk
Couplet poems are believed to ward off evil spirits.

According to Chinese mythology, there was a giant peach tree that contained a passage for which demons used as an entry to the human world. Two gods guarded this tree. Whenever a demon harmed a human, the gods would punish it by being fed to the tigers.

Frightened by the demons, humans started making tablets out of peach trees and carving the names of the two gods into them. Over time, wooden tablets were replaced by the red strips of paper we continue to see hanged on door frames today. Paintings (年画)

The art of painting has subsisted in China for over one thousand years. Like many Chinese New Year decorations, these paintings often represent wishes of fortune and prosperity for the near future. The use of traditional techniques is still popular today and is integrated with the innovation of printing technology.

Sometimes referred to as encyclopedias of folklife, the concepts of Chinese paintings range from heavenly creatures to everyday contemporary activities. Some of the more common paintings used as Chinese New Year decoration depict either a chubby doll-like child or a beautiful woman. These images express wishes for healthy children and a loving family.

Kumquats (金桔)

The Cantonese term from kumquat literally translates to “golden tangerine.” These fruits are very popular in the Cantonese-speaking Southern regions of China including Hong Kong.

The Chinese character for “tangerine” (桔) looks similar to the character for “luck” (吉). The golden color of kumquats also symbolizes wealth and fortune. This fruit is a delight on its own or when added to various Chinese New Year desserts. No wonder so many people continue to plant these trees in their front yards!

Lanterns (灯笼)

The Spring Festival celebration lasts for 15 days. To culminate the occasion, the Lantern Festival (元宵) is held on the last day. The styles of these lanterns vary from basic and traditional shapes like spheres and cubes, to complex ones that resemble lotuses and dragons. Some lanterns have Chinese calligraphy and even poetry written on them!

The Lantern Festival marks the end of the Spring Festival.

The Kongming Lantern (孔明灯) is especially significant during the festival. People write down their wishes on these lanterns before releasing them to the heavens in hopes of getting their wishes granted. Learn more about the significance of the Chinese Lantern Festival.

The origins of these Chinese New Year decorations date back to thousands of years. Their stories continue to be told today and will continue to be heard in the generations to come!

The Chinese also prepare snacks at their homes for visiting friends and family. Be that as may be, everyone enjoys a good bite. If you plan on celebrating the Spring Festival with a constantly happy belly, take a look at these eight irresistible Chinese New Year snacks!

Baked Seeds

The Chinese just love their baked seeds. So much so that they even came up with a term specifically for the act of breaking open a seed with your teeth and eating it – kē. Wherever they are, they simply love to kē on baked seeds whether they are sunflower seeds, diaogua seeds, pumpkin seeds, or watermelon seeds.

Aside from baked seeds, the Chinese also love to roasted seeds!

Aside from being irresistible snacks, seeds also make for wonderful additions to cakes and desserts. You should also be mindful when kē-ing on baked seeds. Once you start, you probably won’t be stopping until it’s time for dinner!

Malt Candy

Malt is the traditional sugar of China. Although it isn’t as prominent today as it used to be, the Chinese customarily make malt candy on the 23rd Lunar December to please the Stove God. It is believed that the Stove God will return on New Year’s Eve to give out blessings or dole out punishment. You can read more about the Stove God at our list of other interesting Chinese New Year myths.

Malt melon gourd

Malt candy is shaped into a melon in some regions of China including Beijing. The process of making malt melon gourd involves forming tube-like strips of malt after much pounding, twisting, and stretching. To create hollow balls, the tube is quickly snipped allowing for the excess malt to form the stem.

Although malt melon gourd used to be one of the most popular Chinese New Year snacks, it is becoming less and less common nowadays because of the lengthy and tiring process of making it.

Candied figures

Malt syrup can also be used to create delicate and tasty art. In the past, candied figures made out of malt syrup could be seen alongside crowded streets during winter. Merchants used sophisticated techniques and used tools like toothpicks and chopsticks to shape the malt into different figures.

During the Spring Festival, these figures are usually shaped into the zodiac animal of the year. These Chinese New Year snacks are not only tasty, but they also have cultural significance.

Candied haw

Once known as traditional winter-time snacks, hawthorn ball kebabs are now enjoyed by the Chinese throughout the year. These tiny delights are drizzled and coated with malt syrup to heighten the sweetness. Haw fruits can also be substituted or added to red bean paste, grapes, walnuts, begonia fruits, or even Chinese yams!

The drizzling of malt syrup makes these treats much sweeter!

Traditional merchants of hawthorn ball kebabs carried large wooden boxes or bamboo baskets. They would stick the kebabs on one side of the box and store tools and ingredients on the other. To gather a crowd, they would make hawthorn ball kebabs in front of curious onlookers and put on a show. If you are into this kind of treats, check out our list of seven sweet Chinese New Year desserts.

Popped Rice

The presence of glutinous rice in many of the mentioned Chinese New Year snacks makes it apparent that rice is an essential ingredient in Chinese cuisine. Be it steamed, boiled, fermented, stir-fried, or pan-fried, the Chinese just cannot resist rice!

Without being drenched in ingredients like butter, salt, or caramel, popped rice maintains its natural flavor. They are fairly easy to make and keeps up with the jolly atmosphere during the Spring Festival as they are also used by children for play.

Despite that, the popularity of popped rice is slowly declining partly because of the complicated traditional process of making them. If you want to try these customary treats, there is a now machine that simplifies the procedure. You can also use short-grain rice instead of glutinous rice.

Ginger Candy

Ginger candy is another traditional winter-time snack that originated in the Hunan Province during the Ming Dynasty. Back in the day, it was very common to find farmers pickling or drying ginger pieces for ginger candy.

Made with fresh garlic, white sugar, salt, and natural seasoning, this treat has the ability to warm you up which makes it a great remedy for cold stomachaches.

Fried Dough Twists

According to Chinese folklore, a part of the Sichuan Province was once infested with poisonous scorpions. The people of the region placed a cursed against them by stretching the dough into long strips and twisting them into the shape of a scorpion’s tail. These “scorpion tails” are then deep-fried and eaten on the summer solstice.

Today, fried dough twists are prepared anytime they are craved for and are staples during the Spring Festival. The twists from the city of Tianjin are particularly popular. They are filled with ingredients such as walnuts and melon slices that add to the flavor!

Ox Tongue Pastry

Calm yourself down, these treats are not made of actual ox’s tongue. Instead, it is a pastry shaped like the tongue of an ox. To make ox tongue pastry, the dough is rolled into long, flat strips, coated with sugary sauce, and topped off with sesame seeds before being baked. If you want it to be more savory, you can also fill the sack with stir-fried meat and onions!

Persimmon Cakes

Persimmon cakes are arguably the most popular Chinese New Year snacks. You can almost be certain to find these treats on the table when visiting friends during the Spring Festival.

Aside from being tasty, persimmon cakes are also very auspicious as they represent the Chinese phrase for “everything goes according to your wishes.” After a well-loved king named Zubing passed away, the people would offer persimmon cakes in his memory on December 5 of the Lunar Calendar. Persimmon cakes are often consumed after a meal of delicious Chinese New Year food.

Fruit Platter

A deep plate filled with fruits is also a staple on tables during the Spring Festival. Aside from being very scrumptious treats, they are also believed to bring blessings to you and your family.

  • Pomegranates – pomegranates symbolize a large family, the ultimate blessing for many Chinese

Chinese New Year Desserts: 7 Tasty Treats

a bunch of white fa gao

The Spring Festival is the most important annual celebration in Chinese culture. Just like the many festivities and red Chinese New Year decoration, Chinese New Year desserts are crafted to represent wishes and blessings for the near future. To bring you luck for the new year, here are seven sweet Chinese delights you have to try.

a bunch of white fa gao
Fa Gao(发糕), a popular Chinese New Year dessert.

Nian Gao

Made of sticky glutinous rice or yellow rice, nian gao is a sweet treat can be found at almost every Chinese household during the Spring Festival. Serving it during the Chinese New Year expresses wishes to be successful in the years to come.

The glutinous rice and yellow rice give nian gao its distinct texture. When crafted in a certain manner, this Chinese New Year dessert can also depict silver or gold bars.

Nian gao is often topped with dried jujube dates.

Variations of the nian gao vary from region to region. In Southern China, they are usually stir-fried along with meat and vegetables and served as a popular Chinese New Year food. Elsewhere, they are typically offered with sugar and lard as desserts.

If you are one with a strong sweet tooth, it is also acceptable to directly dip nian gao in white sugar. The dessert’s signature sweetness represents the wishes of a sweet and successful new year.

Fa Gao

In most of the names of these Chinese New Year desserts, the “gao” is a wish for prosperity. With fa gao, the “fa” expresses the desire for gaining wealth or making a fortune.

To make fa gao, rice is soaked and then grounded into a paste. It is then fermented long enough that fa gao keeps its shape and does not open up. Also, it is very important that the paste is stirred every once in a while during this process.

After fermentation, fa gao is then steamed. The most exciting part of making fa gao is when you lift the lid. It is believed that the luck this treat brings to your family depends on the quality of the finished product. The fluffier the cake and the cleaner the surface, the better!

The trick to making sweet fa gao is to drizzle it with sugar!

You may also experiment with adding different vegetables and fruits to alter the color of the fa gao. Corn flour is used to create golden fa gao, carrots result in joyful red-orange, while green tea radiates a wonderful spring feeling. Fa gao can also be served as delicious Chinese New Year snacks.

Turnip Cake

This savory cake is also among the most commonly served Chinese New Year desserts. Popular in the southern provinces of Guangdong and Fujian, the turnip cake is mainly made out of shredded Chinese radish. Other ingredients include rice flour and various flavoring. Additionally, you may opt to add bits of food like sausages, dried shrimp, shiitake, or peanuts.

Turnip cakes can be pan-fried to make the outer crust crumbly, or non-fried to make it soft all-over. In some dim sum restaurants, you can even customize a turnip cake to suit your taste.

Pan-fry your turnip cakes if you want them crusty on the outside!

For the Hakka ethnic culture, turnip cakes are a specialty during the seventh day of the Spring Festival. The people of Hong Kong prefer to stir-fry turnip cakes with XO sauce, while in other places like Taiwan, turnip cakes are commonly served as a breakfast dish.

The Chinese are fond of infusing flower petals to their desserts such as the sweet osmanthus jelly – another staple treat during the Spring Festival. In Chinese culture, the osmanthus symbolizes auspiciousness, friendship, and success. Simply based on this representation, it’s no wonder the osmanthus jelly is one of the most popular Chinese New Year desserts!

Authentic osmanthus jellies are made without artificial flavoring. Aside from the petals of the osmanthus flower, key ingredients of this dessert include glutinous rice powder and bits of crystal sugar.

The petals and other ingredients can be seen through the jelly.

People from the city of Xianyang use a special osmanthus jam made of preserved petals and the addition of different Chinese herbs. Glutinous rice is stir-fried, grounded, steamed, and added to the jelly. Black sesame, saltwater, and white sugar are then mixed with the dough. Needless to say, the osmanthus jelly is a fragrant, sweet, and savory delight.

Jujube Flower Cake

The jujube flower cake is a dessert made with a popular Chinese fruit as its main ingredient. When making jujube flower cake, it is best that you pick the meatiest jujube fruits and wrap them with dough.

These cakes are typically multi-tiered, but you can also choose to go with simply molding dough into the shape of a flower and just pressing a jujube fruit in the middle of each petal.

Once steamed, the dough should rise to a bit of a spongy texture resulting in what looks like a bouquet of jujube flowers. You can also use food coloring to place dots in the middle of the flower. In Chinese, the word “jujube” is a homophone of “early.” They are often prepared by couples who wish to have children in the near future.

Ai Wo-Wo

Also referred to as “steamed rice cake with sweet stuffing,” ai wo-wo is another one of those Chinese New Year desserts with glutinous rice as the primary ingredient.

There are two variations of rice balls in China – southern rice balls and northern rice balls.

Southern rice balls

Customarily eaten as the first breakfast of the New Year in the regions of Jiangsu and Shanghai, these rice balls are boiled before being served in hot water. Southern rice balls can also be fried or steamed. You may also serve these delightful Chinese New Year desserts with vegetables or meatballs to make it more savory.

Northern rice balls

The main difference between southern rice balls and northern rice balls lies in the process of their preparation. The former is often made to resemble a peach – a symbol of longevity, while the latter is formed in the shape of a ball, which in Chinese, is a homophone of reunions.

Northern rice balls are usually served during the Lantern Festival, the final day of the Chinese New Year. The Significance of the Lantern Festival in Chinese Culture

The Spring Festival is time set aside for family. Age-old traditions like the reunion dinner, visiting in-laws on the second day emphasize the importance of family in Chinese culture. It is only until the fifth day that stores reopen and people go back to their regular routines. But on the 15th day of the celebration, everyone goes out onto the streets to paint the town red and commemorate the celebration.

Popular activities observed during the Lantern Festival include traditional lantern lighting, moon gazing, and eating rice balls.

In Ancient China, women were barely allowed to go out of the house except on the night of the Festival. They would stroll around freely, participate in lighting lanterns, play games, and interact with others around them including men. This is why some people would refer to the occasion as the true Chinese Valentine’s Day.

The celebration also has religious significance. It was important in ancient Chinese Paganism and is still relevant in modern-day Buddhism and ethnic minority cultures. If you’re interested in folklore, check out our list of famous Chinese New Year myths.

History

Many Chinese scholars agree that the celebration started out over 2000 years ago in the Western Han Dynasty. Emperor Wu (汉武帝) dedicated this day for people to perform worship rituals for Taiyi (太一神), one of the rulers of the universe.

There was an intense struggle for power and unrest after his reign ended until Emperor Wen (汉文帝) took over. To commemorate the return of peace, the new emperor designated the 15th as a national holiday. Every household would light lanterns and the occasion became known as 闹元宵 (nào yuán xiāo). “Nào” can be interpreted as having a good time.

Later in the Eastern Han Dynasty, Emperor Ming discovered that Buddhist monks would light candles on the 15th for Buddha. Being a devout Buddhist himself, he ordered the palace and temples to be lit with candles and for his constituency to hang lanterns on the 15th. Both these junctures in history shaped the Lantern Festival we know today.

Lantern Festival Celebration

The duration of the celebrations varied throughout history. During the Ming Dynasty, the celebration lasted around a month. Currently, the event is not technically considered a national holiday so there are no days off. However, there are holidays today that coincide with the celebration so they are often celebrated together.

Torch Festival (火把节)

The purpose of celebrating the Torch Festival is to express wishes of a good harvest to scare away insects and pests. Children and adults alike would participate in the festivity. The children would gather firewood and tree branches for the adults to light. Entire communities would dance in the fields from dusk until dawn while holding these torches. Today, it is still celebrated in some regions of Southwest China.

Vegetable Stealing Festival (偷菜节)

On the 15th, groups of girls from the Miao ethnicity would steal Chinese cabbage from other people’s fields. They would not be reprimanded even when they are caught by the owner, but they are forbidden from stealing from friends and family.

They would gather all their stolen cabbage and feast on them. It is believed that the girl who eats the most cabbage will get married ahead of everyone else. Cabbage is also a popular ingredient in some of the best Chinese New Year food!

Lights and Lanterns

As the name of the festival suggests, lanterns are the highlights of the occasion. It was also formerly called Shang Yuan (上元) and was dedicated to the heavenly palace (天宫).

People would get together in a yard and gather offerings for the gods. They would set aside a lit lantern to represent a god’s seat. You can also check out our article on classic Chinese New Year myths.

The lanterns themselves have numerous variations. They can come in the form of a globe that could fit in the palm of your hand to something as large as a parade float. People also make lanterns in the shape of auspicious symbols and characters.

Lanterns of different styles and colors can be seen during the occasion.

One of the more basic and popular designs is the Kongming lantern (孔明灯), also known as the sky lantern (天灯). In the past, they were used to signify that people were safe after an attack. Nowadays, they are used to express wishes.

The Chinese term for “sky lantern” (天灯—tiān dēng) also sounds similar to the term for “adding children” 添丁 (tiān ding). For this reason, they were often given to newlyweds or couples who have yet to bear children. Pregnant women are sometimes given a pair of small lanterns as wishes for health and safety for both the mother and the unborn child.

Traditions and Activities

Like many Chinese traditional celebrations, the Lantern Festival has its own unique set of activities other than lighting lanterns. In the Northern province of Hebei, there are jǐng xíng lā huā (井陉拉花) performances during the celebration. People would dance to the beat of drums while holding fans and parasol-like props. This dance is often featured in the famous Spring Festival Gala.

Riddles

In ancient China, one of the folks’ favorite pastimes was to ask and answer riddles while indulging in wine. This was later integrated with the celebration as people started writing riddles on the lanterns. They are very popular for festival-goers of all ages because they require you to think critically and outside the box. Some Chinese love stories even suggest you can catch the attention of your crush through these riddles!

Dragon Dances on Lantern Festival (耍龙灯)

The Dragon dance has a long history in Chinese culture. Performers of this dance comprise a team of experienced dancers who manipulate a long and flexible figure of a dragon. Poles are positioned at regular intervals along the length of the figure.

Lion Dances on Lantern Festival (舞狮子)

The Lion dance can be witnessed in various celebrations in China including holidays, weedings, and even store openings. Figures of the lion are often elaborately designed with movable eyes and mouth. Their mouths open as a gesture of demanding for food or red pockets. They sometimes even roll around and play like oversized cats.

Chinese Stilts (踩高跷)

Arising out of Chinese opera, stilt performances have long been a spectacle during the celebration. The costumes and height of the stilts vary depending on the characters.

Chinese New Year Drinks: Tea and Alcohol

containers of tusu wine stacked on each other

China is renowned all over the world for its wonderful tea. Chinese tea was originally intended for medicinal purposes until it eventually became one of several staple Chinese New Year drinks.

containers of tusu wine stacked on each other

China is largely responsible for the popularity of tea culture worldwide. Tea is among the first things the Chinese offer their visitors and you won’t see it served as much as during the Chinese New Year.

Aside from relaxation, tea is also great for relieving hangovers – which is why it is only one of two of the most prominent Chinese New Year drinks. What is the other one? Wine!

The Wine Culture in China

As an agrarian society, the first alcoholic drinks in China were made of fermented grain. Not soon after, various ingredients were added including fruits and berries, flower petals, and milk.

Like tea, Chinese wine was often used for medicinal purposes. Alcohol was even referred to as the leader of all medicine. As a matter of fact, there are many prescriptions are still in use today after being scientifically proven for benefits.

But of course, alcohol is also used in China for socializing. Apparently, the Chinese like to get drunk. So much so that wine is consumed in practically every Chinese ceremony or event. Wine is offered to ancestors and gods, wine is drunk with new in-laws during weddings, and alcohol is virtually a staple in Chinese holidays.

Alcohol in Chinese Festivals

In Chinese, “alcohol” is a homophone of “long-lasting.” During festivals in China, people drink to everlasting happiness, friendships, and other wishes of longevity. There are even different drinks for specific Chinese holidays.

During the Dragon Boat Festival, you should indulge in sweet sedge wine. For the Double Nine Festival, chrysanthemum wine is the staple. As for the famous Chinese New Year, the prominent drink is niánjiǔ (年酒), which literally translates to “year alcohol.” These drinks are also best enjoyed with irresistible Chinese New Year snacks and tasty Chinese New Year desserts.

Chinese New Year Drinks

The most important dinner of the year is the feast on Chinese New Year’s Eve. A table may not have hot pot, spring rolls, or dumplings, but every Chinese household will almost certainly have wine.

In China, 16 and 17-year-olds are allowed to drink alcohol as part of a meal. In some regions, every member of the family has to at least take a sip of niánjiǔ on Chinese New Year as it is believed to provide protection from bad luck.

The Chinese drink during dinner and will continue to drink after the meal as they wait for the coming of midnight. Chinese New Year drinks will also be brought out when guests come over or when people pay New Year visits. However, there isn’t a specific type of niánjiǔ. The drinks people consume may vary from household to household.

White Wine

One of the most popular Chinese New Year drinks is baijiu or Chinese white wine. Baijiu has a clear color and is made of fermented sorghum – which is why it is also referred to as white sorghum wine. Baijiu can also be made of fermented cereal grains other than sorghum including wheat, barley, and glutinous rice.

Because of its high alcohol content, the closest comparison to baijiu is vodka. It can be bought in glass or ceramic bottles and is commonly consumed using a shot glass.

Tusu Wine

Tusu wine was the most popular type of niánjiǔ in Ancient China. The wine is also referred to as suìjiǔ, as “suì” is a synonym of “nián.” Legend has it that in ancient times, a man would go around his neighborhood to give out bags of medicinal ingredients. He instructed his neighbors to soak the bag in water and drink it on New Year’s Day. They later discovered that the drink was able to protect them from the plague.

Tusu wine is contained in traditional tanks.

You can also check our article on interesting Chinese New Year myths to read more on the origin story of tusu wine along with other folktales. Another thing that makes tusu wine even more interesting is its drinking order. Chinese customs would dictate that the eldest of the family should give their blessings and drink first. On the contrary, children are allowed to drink tusu wine first.

A scholar from the Jin Dynasty explained that children can go first because children grow a year older during the Spring Festival and this is something to celebrate about. On the other hand, there is nothing to commemorate when seniors lose another year.

Jiao Wine

This type of wine is essentially baijiu infused with flowers of Sichuan peppers and cypress tree leaves. Jiao represents peace, health, and longevity. It is also served during the Spring Festival as an offering to ancestors and consumed to give New Year blessings.

Other Chinese New Year Drinks

Aside from other variants of wine such as red wine and rice wine, foreign drinks are also popular in China. If you are into beer, you can never go wrong with Tsingtao beer.

Tsingtao beer is very popular in China.

The country also houses 56 ethnicities, many of which are known to be fond of alcoholic beverages. The Inner Mongolians love horse milk wine. Households of the Yao ethnicity even give a kilogram of grains to the community leader to make New Year celebration wine.

If you aren’t into getting drunk, there are also many varieties of Chinese tea to choose from. When you want to ease digestion after a heavy New Year’s Eve dinner, try Pu’er tea. Green tea and oolong tea are also great at relieving your stomach after eating greasy or oily food. Aside from these Chinese New Year drinks, the holiday is also an avenue for the best Chinese New Year food.

The essence of the Spring Festival is to bring the family together and express one’s wishes and blessings for the new year. There is no better way of gathering your loved ones than preparing delectable food and drinks!

Chinese New Year Mythology: Spring Festival Stories

a sculpted image of nian, a chinese mythical monster

China is a nation known for its influential culture and rich history. It is interesting how they tell the origins of Chinese New Year myths and explain why age-old traditions are still practiced to this day. From the story of how the Chinese zodiac animals were chosen as to why malt candies are still relevant, here are ten Chinese folktales you should know about.

Nián: The New Year’s Eve Monster

Nián is a Chinese mythological beast that lives at the bottom of the sea. On the evening before the New Year, Nián ascends from the water. According to Chinese New Year myths, Nián terrorizes villages and feast on animals and humans. Villagers would run to the mountains and seek temporary shelter in order to steer clear of Nián.

An image of the Chinese mythical creature.

One New Year’s Eve, a beggar came to the village to seek sanctuary. The beggar promised to provide protection from Nián in return. Eventually, an old woman accepted his offer and invited him to her house. The begar started decorating the homes in the village, placing a piece of red Chinese New Year ornaments on doors.

At midnight, Nián came to the village. It immediately stopped as soon as it saw the red papers. The monster roared in frustration. All of a sudden, firecrackers started exploding and Nián trembled in fear. The old beggar came out, wearing red Chinese New Year clothes, to mockingly laugh at the creature as it fled the village.

The villagers returned the next morning and were pleasantly surprised that none of their homes were destroyed. From then on, before New Year’s Eve, people started fortifying their homes with red ornaments and lighting up firecrackers at midnight.

Tale of the 12 Zodiac Animals

The story of the 12 zodiac animals is one of the most well-known Chinese New Year myths. The order of the twelve zodiac animals was determined by a race arranged by the Jade Emperor.

small models of the 12 animals told in chinese new year myths
All of the 12 animals participated in the race.

Many wonder how the rat was able to finish ahead of faster animals like the horse, tiger, and dragon. It seems impossible to think that a tiny pest could beat out such tough competition.

How the rat was able to win

The rat used a mighty trait it had to its advantage – cleverness. Since the rat was supposed to go together with the cat, it slipped something into the feline’s tea a night before the race. The cat overslept and was unable to participate in the race.

On its way to the race, the rat met with the ox. The two made a deal: the rat offered to sing for the ox during the race. In exchange, the ox would carry the rat to the finish line.

The rat’s singing encouraged the ox to speed up. They crossed the line before everyone else. How did the rat end up being first? It cunningly jumped ahead of the ox just when they were about to cross the finish line!

The tiger and the rabbit then followed soon after. Instead of potentially finishing ahead of the pack, the dragon was delayed because it deviated from the race to save an entire village from a flood.

The snake arrived at the same time as the dragon but was too small to be noticed immediately. The dog, the monkey, and the rooster finished together after they helped a god in another country.

Finishing close to each other was the horse and the goat. The horse was just a tad bit faster than the goat. After its home was destroyed by a wolf, the pig had to rebuild its house before entering the race and, eventually, finishing last.

Couplet Poems and Evil Spirits

Throughout the Spring Festival, you may have noticed couplet poems written in long strips of red paper pasted on both sides of a doorframe. Not only does it represent the paper used by the old beggar to ward off Nián, but it also protects you from demons wandering our world!

strips of couplet poems placed on a sidewalk
Couplet poems are believed to ward off evil spirits.

When evil spirits roam our realm, they go through a passage under a giant peach tree guarded by two gods. These gods would punish any demon that harmed a human by feeding them to the tigers.

Frightened by these evil spirits, they started carving up the gods’ names into peach wood tablets. They would place these tablets outside their doors to scare off the wandering demons. Over time, the peach wood tablets were replaced by strips of red paper which we continue to see pasted onto doorframes today.

The Red Underwear Tradition

During your zodiac animal year, you are more prone to catching the attention of evil spirits. Similar to what the old beggar from the story of Nián, you can safeguard yourself by wearing red articles of clothing, particularly your underwear.

The Chinese also believe that the soul of infants can be taken back at any time before turning 100 days old. To prevent this from happening, parents would let their young children wear a lock pendant. If you don’t want your zodiac animal year to be clouded by bad luck, make sure to wear red underwear!

The Legend of Red Pockets

The origin story of the Chinese red pocket involves an evil spirit named Sui. On New Year’s Eve, Sui would pat the heads of sleeping children three times. The children would wake up the next morning with a fever that caused great worry to their parents.

Red pockets are sometimes given to pass on luck.

One New Year’s Eve, a couple decided to gift some coins to their kid and left them by his pillow as he was asleep. When Sui came, the bright flash of the coins frightened the spirit. From then on, people started giving children money wrapped in red paper on New Year’s Eve.

Calligraphy for Happiness or Fortune

The visual art related to writing is another popular decoration found everywhen during the Spring Festival. The most common Chinese word written in calligraphy is , meaning happiness or fortune. If you are familiar with Chinese characters, you may have noticed that the word is rarely displayed upright when used as decoration for the Chinese New Year.

an image of the fu character upside down
People hang the character upside down in honor of an empress.

The origin story of the upside-down fú image

It is believed that during the Ming Dynasty, the emperor ordered every household to decorate their homes by pasting fú onto their doors. One illiterate family displayed the character upside down.

On New Year’s Day, the emperor sent soldiers to see if his mandate was obeyed by the people. The troops found the illiterate family’s poster. Outraged, the emperor ordered the soldiers to punish the family by death.

Fortunately, his empress aided to the family and came up with a clever explanation: the Chinese word for “upside-down” sounds exactly like the Chinese word for “here.” In other words, portraying the character upside down would represent that happiness and fortune are present.

The kindness of the empress convinced the emperor to set the family free. In remembrance of her compassion, people continue to hang the word upside down to this day.

Dumplings and Ears

While some people see dumplings as semblances gold or silver ingots, others say they look more like ears. The goddess and mother of all life Nǚ wā is said to have created humans out of yellow clay.

Dumplings are usually prepared with sauce and various vegetables.

During the winter, Nǚ wā realized that the ears would freeze and start cracking because of the cold. She started sewing the ears in place and positioned the end of the thread in the mouth to solve this problem.

To express gratitude for Nǚ wā, people started molding the dough into the shape of ears and stuffed it with vegetables and meat. The Origin of the Tusu Wine

Alcoholic drinks are a staple in the Spring Festival. One of the most famous drinks consumed during the occasion is Tusu wine. It is also the subject of one of the more popular Chinese New Year myths. The origin story of the Tusu wine is about a man who saved an entire village from a plague.

Tusu wine is contained in traditional tanks.

The man is said to have created a mixture of herbs, leaves, and grains and placed them in individual bags. He gave one to each of his neighbors and instructed them to soak the mixture in water and drink it on New Year’s Day.

The villagers later discovered that the drink was able to save them from the life-threatening plague. They named the wine after the Tusu-structured home of the man who gave them the bags. If you want to learn more about the Tusu wine, check out our article on popular Chinese New Year drinks.

The Stove God and Malt Candy

Introduced in one of the most well-known Chinese New Year myths, the Stove God takes charge of the people’s meals and livelihood. He is among the gods who interact with humans the most.

On the 23rd of Lunar December, just before the New Year, the Stove God ascends to the heavens to tell the Jade Emperor about how each family behaved throughout the year. He would soon return to Earth to either give out blessings or dole out punishment.

To please the Stove God, people started making malt candy gourds before the New Year and leave them out at night. The treats would either sweeten his palates and make him sing praises about the family to the Jade Emperor or stick his teeth together and prevent him from saying bad things.

a chinese new year calendar showing the dates and days

Most of the people celebrate the New Year on January 1st, and it only lasted one day. While the Chinese have their own date for this kind of event, most of the people across the world also celebrate with them.

Most of the shops in China are closed during the first five days and some don’t even re-open until the end of all the festivities. Because of this, people stock up on New Year supplies (年货—nian huo) in advance. Chinese New Year dishes also start showing up in dining tables during this time.

The Laba Festival

In Chinese tradition, the Laba Festival (腊八节—Làbā jié) marks the start of the Spring Festival. It falls on December 8th, 2019 on the Lunar Calendar or January 2nd, 2020 on the Solar (Gregorian) Calendar. During the festival, people pray to ancestors and gods and hold memorial ceremonies to express desires of fortune and a good harvest.

Laba porridge (腊八粥—Làbā zhōu) is the main food for the festival. It is made of several types of grains including red beans, red dates, and husked rice. Other dishes with Laba as the primary ingredient such as Laba tofu (腊八豆腐—Làbā dòufu), noodles (腊八面—Làbā miàn) and wheat kernel rice (麦仁饭—Mài rén fàn) are also served during the occasion.

The festival is pagan in nature, but it has been integrated into religions such as Daoism and Buddhism. Hence, it is practiced by the majority of the population across the nation.

Origin of the Zodiac Signs

According to one Chinese folktale, the Jade Emperor needed 12 animals to guard the palace. The cat asked the rat to help him sign up, but the rat forgot. This is the reason why they became mortal enemies.

The ox was first in line at the palace, but the rat sneakily climbed its back and jumped ahead. The tiger and the dragon witnessed the rat’s antics and thought it was unfair, but they could only settle behind the ox.

The rabbit challenged the dragon to a race and succeeded. Frustrated, the dog bit the rabbit and was sent to the back of the line as punishment. The snake, the horse, the goat, the monkey, and the rooster also got into a fight. When everything was fixed, the pig arrived, very late, and could only settle to be the last.

The science behind zodiac signs

To determine the Chinese zodiac animals’ personality, fortune, and compatibility with each other, Chinese astrologers made use of the following technical information:

  • Dì Zhī (地支) or Earthly Branches were the 12 terms originally used to refer to the years. They were also assigned to hours of the day based on solar time.
  • The animals were later integrated as mnemonics and were tagged as either yīn (阴)or yáng (阳).
  • The 10 Celestial Stems (天干—tiān gān) couple with the Earthly Branches for a 60-year calendrical cycle. One of the five elements is fixed for each year. The element is primarily what determines which you are compatible with.
  • Twelve Earthly Branches: zi (子), chǒu (丑), yín (寅), mǎo (卯), chén (辰), sì (巳), wǔ (午), wèi (未), shēn (申), yǒu (酉), xū (戌), hài (亥).
  • Ten Celestial Stems: jiǎ (甲), yǐ (乙), bǐng (丙), ding (丁), wù (戊), jǐ (己), gēng (庚), xīn (辛), rén (壬), guǐ (癸).
  • Five elements: water (水—shuǐ), wood (木—mù), fire (火—huǒ), earth (土—tǔ), metal (金—jīn).
